Tuesday May 04, 2021
It's an interesting thing how myths can impact our lives in powerful waves. On this episode, I talk about the Pygmalion effect and how this Greek myth serves as a reminder of the power of expectations.
Research in various institutions has proven that the Pygmalion effect is real. They've tested and duplicated the effect many times. What's more important is that you and I can test and duplicate the power of setting high expectations.
I share with you several stories of how this has played out in my life and the lives of my clients and even Jesus' disciples.

SAGE Series Part 4 - SAGE Leaders Spend Time Eating With The People They Lead
Tuesday Mar 23, 2021
Tuesday Mar 23, 2021
After studying the lives of great leaders and experiencing great leaders, there's one interesting approach that is common to their leadership. These leaders choose to lead in the context of eating with others.
On this episode, I talk about how you can leverage this leadership strategy in three ways.
- Invite your employees to meals and serve them through this experience by listening and supporting.
- Invite friends, coworkers, and peers to meals and share what you want to accomplish in your life and business to build powerful accountability.
- Invite someone that you would like to mentor you to a meal and ask great questions, listen intently, and enjoy your meal with them.
There is remarkable power in fellowship and sharing a meal together. SAGE Leaders are intentional about this and choose to create contexts to enjoy food with those they influence and those that influence them.
Your challenge is to list out 3-5 people that you can invite to a meal over the course of the next 30-days. Pick at least one person from each of the 3 categories mentioned above.

Communication, community, and freedom are 3 of the things that Dan provides as a leader of his organization. In this episode, Dan shares how this has empowered his team to amazing success.
Dan is an example of what happens when a visionary leader surrounds themselves with people that can catch the vision, own it, and achieve amazing things.
Dan is a dreamer! He loves working on ideas and getting the ball rolling and then handing it off to the team of amazingly talented people around him to implement. Often times these ideas revolve around baseball, insurance, marketing and Eagles Nest International (children's home in Guatemala).
Daniel Vander Kooi is a business owner and entrepreneur living in the very small town of Lynden, Washington. The phrase, “Culture is King”, that we have heard so often, is really taken and applied to each area Dan spends his time in.
He is husband and dad of 3 kids, owner, and partner of 3 different businesses, Board President of Eagles Nest International- an orphanage in Guatemala, and on top of that, he is a varsity high school baseball coach. Like many business owners, spreading his time and energy in so many directions can present a challenge.
However, over the last 11 years, Dan has shifted his approach to focus on building strong teams around him that thrive on healthy cultures. His method has proven to be financially and personally beneficial to each industry and area of life he is invested in. Not only has he found freedom for growth in his businesses and opportunities to give back to communities, but he has also been able to find more quality time in his favorite job, Dad.

Applying The SAGE Mindset To What's Holding You Back
Thursday Aug 06, 2020
Thursday Aug 06, 2020
If you're like me, there are seasons where you feel held back. Like there's something in the way or someone (myself) preventing the opportunities and blessings.
But what are we to do in these situations? For me, I go back to the SAGE Mindset. Self-awareness, Accountability, Growth, and Empowerment.
If we work through these 4 areas of personal/professional development, we can get back on track.
I'm aware that there are some doubts creeping in. Now I want to lean on two of my personal values of ambition and community to help me through. -- Self-Awareness.
Next, I step into more Accountability and will reach out to my wife, my coach, and two friends this week to get support on what could be holding me back. -- Accountability
Third, I have a Growth Mindset. I need to remind myself of this and get some perspective on the lessons I'm learning from the doubts and fears. -- Growth
Finally, what needs to happen in my life to empower me to move forward in my business and these fears/doubts Whatever that is, can I share it with other others to empower them? -- Empowerment
Just running through these 4 areas reminds me of what it is to have a SAGE Mindset & helps me in times like these.

In part 2 of this 7 part series, we focus on using accountability to create balance in your life. Most people don't think of accountability as a way to create balance but it is a powerful way to make it happen.
I teach you how to use the Accountability PASS. The PASS represents the 4 different types of accountability you can use to maintain balance.
- Passive - sharing your plans, stories, intentions
- Active - asking people to actively engage you on your journey
- Stuff - the things in your life that will remind you to stay accountable
- Self - it all starts and stops with YOU.
